English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

  • The English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) is a school-level committee comprised of parents, staff, and community members designated to advise school officials on English learner programs and services. The ELAC shall be responsible for the following tasks:

    • Advising the principal and staff in the development of a site plan for English learners and submitting the plan to the School Site Council for consideration of inclusion in the School Plan for Student Achievement.
    • Assisting in the development of the school-wide needs assessment.
    • Ways to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance.
    • Each ELAC shall have the opportunity to elect at least one member to the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC).

What is ELAC?
The English Learner Advisory Committee advises the site and the district (through DELAC representatives) on issues pertaining to ELL/LEP students. Each site with 21 or more ELL/LEP students is required by state law to have an ELAC. Each ELAC will send one representative to the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) monthly meetings.

Who can join ELAC?
Parents, staff, community members and students by the percentage of ELL parents must be at least equal to the percentage of ELL students at the site.

What if I don't speak English?
Translators will be provided for the language spoken by the majority of parents on the committee.

What is the time commitment?
Approximately 1-2 hours monthly or to be determined by the school. DELAC representatives will meet about five times during the year.
